Helpful links for parents
This is my new page set aside to help parents who are trying to help motivate their children with reading, writing, vocabulary development, etc. I've put my favorite web sites that have really worked in the past with my students.
Reading Tools:
Good Reads- this is basically a social networking site for readers. If your child doesn't know what to read next or is looking for suggestions, GREAT SITE! They can see what other people are reading, join the Whittier group (Warriors ROCK the bookshelf) and add me or Mrs. Perry as a friend for suggestions.
NetGalley- this is a really neat site where students can log in and download books which have not been released yet to their Kindle or computer.
Vocabulary and Spelling Tools:
FreeRice- one of the teachers recommended this site to me and I've been addicted ever since! What happens is you are given multiple choice definitions for a vocabulary word. For each word you get correct, the organization donates rice to the World Hunger Association. You can change the level of difficulty, but beware, it's just as addictive as Call of Duty (at least in my "English teacher" eyes!).
Spelling City- a GREAT tool which provides you with the games as long as you provide the words (meaning, you can use the words we're using in class).
